Comping [LP-comp] by Moonrise [2010]

Moonrise . Comping . OB/W10-016

1 - Come And Take
2 - Wine
3 - Barbaric Yawp
4 - Nights Never End
5 - Civil Contempt
6 - Love
7 - Sunny Day/Rainy Day
8 - Wish Thinking
9 - When You Smile
10 - Done (acoustic)
11 - Good Inside
12 - Sleep + (C.T.)
13 - Mahatma (full version)
14 - Youthful Song (+ TBWTTIHS + O)

--

This only exists because I wanted to make available the songs Moonrise’s recorded and released in CD back in the nineties.
Moonrise never had a full album release until now, but at least one cassette compilation and four CD compilations feature Moonrise’s recordings.

The initial idea here was to make all these compilations fully available as digital downloads.
After all they were all either released or distributed by O Bosque / Woodland when they were made available in their original format, but I was afraid the other bands could maybe not be happy with this (and I was too lazy and impatient to contact them), so now we’ve got here Moonrise’s first full album ever.

Comping refers both to this eventual “release for releasing”, to practice of camping - so dear to the band’s members, and of course to its being a compilation of tracks previously release in compilations. And it refers primarily to the wish of providing some extra/bonus material.

Come And Take, Wine, Barbaric Yawp, Nights Never End, Civil Contempt and Love are from Old Moon Whale, a 18-track CD compilation released in 1996 by Artifact Records (run by City Limits’ members), featuring the bands Old Magic Pallas and Speed Whale alongside Moonrise, with 6 songs for each one of the three bands.

Sunny Day/Rainy Day comes from the Japanese CD compilation +S br “People Are Required…”, released in 2003 by Plan De Sens.
Some of th other bands in this compilation: Magic Crayon, Pullovers, Astromato, Walden, Valv, Multisofa, Grape Storms, Fellini, Pelvs and Luisa Mandou Um Beijo.

Wish Thinking and When You Smile are from Don’t Be Afraid My Son, released by Dead Birds Wanna Fly’s Alcides in 1995. This was probably the first CD compilation with indie-rock-pop bands ever released in Brazil. Some of the other bands in this compilation: Comespace, UV Ray, Cigarettes and Sleepwalkers.

Done (acoustic) is from This Is The Sun, a cassette compilation released by Solaris Records (run by The Automatics’ Alexandre Alves) in 1998. Some of the other bands in this compilation: Snooze, Swamps and May Speed.

Good Inside comes from Moonrise’s own compilation release: Out. This song was originally recorded back in 1994 for Woodland, which would have been Moonrise's first demotape, if it'd have ever been promoted.

Sleep, Mahatma and Youthful Song are from the compilation Different Songs, the first proper CD release by O Bosque / Woodland, of 1998. Some of the other bands in this compilation: Six Degrees, Chronic Missing, Divine and The Old Suit.
But here all three songs are special versions.

Announcement: International compilation project tracklists and release dates!

After receiving hundreds of good submissions, in a mere 26 day period, from all over the world, we are pleased to announce the tracklists and release dates of our THREE international compilations!
:)
We know the initial idea was to make one international compilation, but due to the incredible amount and superb quality of the material submitted, we thought “the more the merrier!”, so now you have three brand new compilations, in the series format.

The compilations will be released first as a digital download and probably later as a CD as well.
Even if this is our first project of this kind, a completely DIY project, with all its foreseeable/imaginable difficulties and monetary limitations, every artist on it will be remunerated.
Well, their remuneration will depend on the selling.
All the profit from the selling will be shared equally among the artists and the label. Of course if no one buys, there’ll be nothing to be shared.

So if you think it’s worth a try, check it out! All the three compilations will be available on iTunes, bandcamp.com, Amazon, emusic, Napster, Spotify, last.fm etc.
Support DIY! :)

After the split of the lofi rock group Barins, three of them went on to form In Cases in June 2009.
Initially a trio, then a quartet, the band In Cases was formed in Brighton, England, with a heterogeneous formation - drums, guitar, keyboard, voice, sax and other homemade wind instruments - and influences from artists like Nico, Neu!, John Zorn, Stereolab, Portishead, Battles and Micachu.
The band In Cases lasted less than two years and in that time had only one recording session, which originated the album Flat 2; plus some rehearsal recordings and videos from gigs made with the cell phone.

The band played gigs in several cities of England (Brighton, London, Bristol, among others) and was on tour in 2010 with gigs in England, Scotland, Ireland, France, Poland and Germany.

--

6 facts about In Cases:
- they love effects and weird forms and subjects;
- they play instruments like violin, sax, flute, home-made wind instruments, processor, synthesizer, in adittion to the usual drums, keyboard and guitar (and there's no bass-guitar at all);
- they love to live in the UK, even if they're not British;
- they love to play (loud) in new different places;
- they don't like their band's name that much right now;
- they love their songs madly.

Here it is, the “famous” Different Songs.

This is the compilation I mentioned in the presentation text of this blog, my first (and for the time being, only) effort producing a CD compilation with Brazilian indie bands, back in 1998.
The idea was pretty simple, since no one who played in an indie band in Brazil those days had any money to release an independent album, I decided to invite some eight bands whose sound was good to me to participate in a sort of cooperative for a compilation project. So the bands handed over the recordings and the money equivalent to 1/16 of the total costs each and I paid for the other 1/2 and actually produced the album from top to toe (contacting/selecting suppliers, mastering, artwork, promotion).

The release of Different Songs was surprisingly successful, if we think about the Brazilian indie scene of the 90s.
Good reviews, interviews and articles in many fanzines, newspapers and magazines from more than ten Brazilian states, some airplay on independent radio shows across the country, at least one video clip on Brazilian MTV (Moonrise’s Youthful Song), shows in at least 4 capitals (Sao Paulo, Curitiba, Rio de Janeiro and Brasilia) and many other cities.

(Italiano)

Before 2004, when I emigrated from Brazil, I used to work mastering audio for bands and a couple of rehearsing and recording studios in Sao Paulo. This way I could know a lot of interesting bands.
This record by Shiksa is a collection of tracks I mastered for them in 2001. As I think they never released these versions I can say this record’s pretty exclusive.

But I didn’t know Shiksa because of this mastering thing. It was Sandro, from Quadrophenia studio and many excellent bands (like Momento 68 and Continental Combo), who presented Carlos and Helena to me. Later I found out that I was studying in the same university as Alex.
Carlos, the drummer for Shiksa, and I played together with Sandro once; we were trying to adapt my individual project Walden to a band format.

I really love Shiksa, their sound’s weird and cultured, ironic, strong, jazzy and rough, all at the same time! They’re from Sao Paulo.

Out [demo-comp] by Moonrise [1996]

Moonrise . Out . OB/W96-002

1 - Percentual Moments
2 - When You Smile
3 - Sunday’s Dead
4 - (C.T.)
5 - Sunny Day/Rainy Day
6 - Nights Never End
7 - Good Inside
8 - (Est)
9 - The Boy With The Thorn In His Side

--

(Portugues)

This is the third and last demotape by Moonrise, and it’s a compilation demo.
Every one of the three different phases of the band is represented in here.

Percentual Moments and When You Smile are from what I call the second phase, with City Limits’ Paulo programming the drum machine.
The first here is an outtake from the Old Moon Whale’s session (or Don’t Be Afraid My Son’s, I can’t recall now). The second is a different version from Don’t Be Afraid My Son and Victor.

Sunday’s Dead, Sunny Day/Rainy Day and my version for The Smiths’ The Boy With The Thorn In His Side are from the so-called third phase, and that is only I playing guitar and keyboard and singing.
Gilson wrote the lyrics and sung with me on Sunday’s Dead. Sunny Day/Rainy Day was released some ten years later by a Japanese label within a compilation CD dedicated to the Brazilian indie music.

Nights Never End and Good Inside are from what I called the first and last phase, with Marco playing the acoustic drum kit. Yeah, in the beginning Moonrise was Marco (drums), Isabel (bass) and me (guitar and vocal). Then, after the second and third phases of the band, with drum machine and second guitar players (Claudio and Cal), the last incarnation of the band was again Marco, Isabel and me.
Both tracks here were taken from the first demotape, Woodland.

Yes, Moonrise’s first demotape was called Woodland and was recorded back in 1994!
From there I took the name for my tiny underground label!
:-)
The cover drawing for this demo, Out, was by Pale Sunday’s Sineval.

s/t [EP] by Walden [2001]

Walden . s/t . OB/W01-006

1 - Tarde
2 - Insone
3 - Náusea
4 - Pronto, O Escândalo
5 - Insone (bonus excerpt)
6 - This Is Just A Modern Rock Song

(Portugues)
(Italiano)

This is a transition record, my first one with songs in Portuguese, and the last one I released as Walden.
After this Walden became Zanin and I increasingly came to make more experimentalisms and mostly electronica-oriented music, at least for the next 4 years.

When I was recording these songs, my son Lauro, 5 at that time, was really curious and eager to participate in all that I was doing with those instruments, the portastudio and the computer etc. So, despite all the lyrics being totally unrelated to Lauro, he always was with me while I was recording and was important to the making of the record, both playing his toy keyboard and singing with me as drawing the cover.

My friend Neri da Rosa from Curitiba’s radio show Ultimo Volume made the graphic design.
The words I sing in Pronto, O Escandalo are an excerpt from Sartre’s The Age of Reason, even as I wrote Náusea inspired by the famous French philosopher work. The words for Tarde I wrote while working as a guard in a reformatory in Sao Vicente.
Insone was a selection/adaptation of some lines I had written some 9 years before.

This is yet older! These are probably the oldest recordings of mine to be posted here. Well, if I won’t change my mind and decide to post the really rough recordings of my earliest musical days, but firstly I’d have to find out where I left this ‘material’ anyway...
Corsage vocalist Antonio and I formed Any Wise Pub when my previous band, The Other Side, broke up. This was 1991.

The Other Side was a great – and brief – experience to me. A friend of mine, Katia, an intellectual girl who knew almost everything about almost every good band I could imagine at that time had some writings and when I read them I wrote some guitar lines and made her want to sing in a band. Then we called our mutual friends Cleber (Corsage’s drummer) and Marco for the bass (who would later play with me again with Moonrise and Magic Crayon). Well, the band lasted just for one show, opening for Garage Fuzz in Sao Vicente (seacost of the province of Sao Paulo, Brazil). We were all creative – and hard to deal with – forces and with different backgrounds and perspectives. The set-list for this only gig consisted of the few songs we’d written and two covers: Loop’s Black Sun and Sonic Youth’s Dirty Boots (with Garage Fuzz’s Alexandre “Farofa” joining us on stage). I broke my foot on that night, for the record. We never recorded anything, apart from that gig (and it’s impossible to hear anything there except noise and feedback).

Ok, Antonio and I used to go to pubs, a lot. The influences we shared at that time were mostly Velvet Underground, Stogges, MC5, punk and grunge.
He was the vocalist for Corsage, he wanted to learn how to play the guitar. Fair enough I thought.
Then we called a jazz/bossa-nova bassist and a heavy-metal drummer.
Antonio and I played the guitars and sang.
Our gigs were incendiary. AWP was the first band with which I played for a numerous audience, playing festivals, winning a contest for being in a compilation and conceding interviews.

This demotape contains the only recordings we've made. All was recorded live in the rehearsal room, except the two last tracks, proper studio versions (I can’t recall the difference between them now) of Sadness Of A Pretty Lady (that was part of our prize for the compilation thing).

The band came to an end in 1993, when I started playing the drums for the band Speed Whale, then I met Isabel and definitely started to calm down my musical tastes a little, hehe, at least for a while.

s/t [demo-EP] by O Passeio De Victor [1997]

4 - Um Passeio de Inverno Pelos Bosques e Cachoeiras de Paratinga

6 - A Idade da Razão

This one is really old, one of the first Woodland’s releases…

O Passeio de Victor is the name of this side project from Sao Vicente (seacost of the province of Sao Paulo, Brazil) I ran for a short period whilst playing with the penultimate incarnation of Moonrise, that is between the end of 1996 and the end of 1997.
It consisted of a bunch of friends who were into literature (existentialism, Beat generation, North American Naturalism/Transcendentalism), cult movies, Tropicalia, Clube da Esquina, Bossa Nova, Legiao Urbana, Mangue Bit and Indie Rock.

These six songs are the only recordings by this project.
I recorded the drums for the first three songs in a studio, on my own, in a two hour period, using a cassette portastudio in a rehearsal room. Everything else was recorded at home.

I would like to paste here the original press release (all photocopied in that fanzine kind of appearance, of course), but I didn’t find it, so when I’ll find it I’ll update this post…

I’d always avoided releasing this material, because:
1. I used to think I would be able to find the time to record and/or remix everything properly;
2. More than 70% of the tracks contain non-authorized samples (well, I’ve never asked authorization).

All the process of composition, sampling, programming and recording was done between 2001 and 2004, before I emigrated from Brazil.

Some notes/tags on the tracks:

1. I’d already hatched at that time that I would live in Italy. It’s a homage to Fellini and Bruno Zanin. My son Lauro sings in Italian, he was 6 years old. The bass line is a sample of Megssa’s voice on Magic Crayon’s Air Guitar Man, low-pitched.

2. The drums loops were taken from a Magic Crayon rehearsal, I was playing the drums to Fabio Barbosa in order to arrange a new song. The voice sampled was taken from a protest inside a protest. The story is long, if you can read Portuguese, here it is:
Mídia Tática Brasil - Casa das Rosas.

3. That’s Nick Drake voice, with a Carpenters sampled piano, Fabio Barbosa sampled drums and my son Lauro sampled bass picking. In the end it’s Chopin, all processed, of course.

4. Simple experiment with sequencing, synthesizing and vocoder and a processed lot of chords from an acoustic guitar cd-rom course.

5. Processed citar and guitars, synthesized bass, and samples of me talking on the phone to an Italian priest, my teacher of Italian and my ancestors town’s council answering machine. I was researching my ancestry and learning Italian.

6. The lyrics here are a Kerouac’s excerpt, which I translated into Italian.

7. The lyrics are by Fotograma’s Luiz Jr. I sung this immediately after waking up in the morning.

8. Carmela Toninelo’s lyrics I’ve turned musical. Pseudo folk with drum machine (!).

9. Venetian dialect inside my distant relatives’ friend’s car. It was during my first trip to Italy, he was going to take some friends and me for a ride to see a castle but the hangover from the previous night party was killing me, so… mission aborted. Various bits processed from ambient noises.

10. Oxford street, and then inside a bus going to Brixton, London. My first time there, with a MD recorder inside my pocket. Drums made with noise bits from the ambient.

11. Another one made with ambient recordings. Samples processed to create bits of noises. Analogy between the movie The Terminal and our situation: we lost our flight in Heathrow, passed the whole night there.

12. The guitar Isabel’s grandfather left her and I, with an open tuning, and a single note on the keyboard. And a processed sample of Miles Davis. No words in order to see the road.

13. Recorded in one night, after one of Fotograma’s recording sessions at my place. This was the first time I used a sequencer and a drum machine on the computer. It’s full of samples, like Pulp Fiction, Joao Gilberto, Chico Science, Shuggie Otis, John Peel and MC5. The keyboard was Luiz Jr’s. Yes, we have tried to play together a long time ago and we’ve made some good recordings (at least in my opinion they were), which were never released.

14. This is about booze. Italian Booze. There had been a party at my place and we’d drunk all available booze already when I decided to open the bottle of Prugna I’d brought from Italy. And it was devastating… Voice samples of an Interpol’s interview (“thank you”) and mostly of Italian kitschy-comedy movie Vacanze di Natale. Instrument samples of Teenage Fanclub and a Scandinavian band that I can’t recall now.

15. The drums and the bass were all one only processed sample of Amanda Humphrey’s Power of Love. The voices samples come from the movies Angel Heart and Oriundi. The marvellous yellow tremolo pedal I used to record the guitar was Luis’, of the band Os Espectros, with which I was playing at the time.

16. My homage to Dead Poets Society and Robin Williams, with a Radiohead-type bass line and an indiepop funk carioca flavor.

17. Bezerra da Silva, Sandy, Dr Pimpolho, REM, Go-Betweens and drums samples of me playing for band Abstrato, all together.

18. This Nick Drake’s version was originally recorded by Luiz Jr and me for Fotograma. I played the open tuning acoustic guitar and we played his keyboard and sung together. I took his voice out of the mix for this version.

This is my first effort as a musician since I came to live in England.

I played the drums and ‘sung’ on every song here.
The point here is having loads of fun, being ironic/sarcastic and enjoying booze. Well, except Larry, our 13 year-old guitar player (my son), who’s allowed to just a quick swig…

Barin is a real Italian surname and every member of the group has a fictitious (but inspired) name combined.
The major influences on the sound are The Fall, Modern Lovers, Ramones, Animal Collective, Guided by Voices, Velvet Underground and Pin Ups.

Here goes the beginning of the album liner notes:

Barins are a confraternity of lo-fi freethinking migrants.

This demo album is the result of their first - and for the time being, only - three recording sessions, held between December 2008 and February 2009.

For the bands / artists

(Portugues)
(Italiano)

Do you have a band and want to promote it?
Here we go:
If you want to see your band's material here, all you have to do is to send it to me and hope I like it.

Write to bosquewoodland [at] googlemail [dot] com

--

If you saw your band's (or label’s) material here and you don't want to see it here, all you need to do is writing me a polite e-mail and I'll take it off.
But if the record's here you need to know two things:
1. It's because it is (or was) available for free elsewhere (most probably by yourselves);
2. It's because I love the record and I wanted more people to listen to it.

How it works

(Portugues)
(Italiano)

It's pretty simple: I upload/release the records and you download/buy them.

Part of them can be downloaded for free.
Yes, for free.

But why would you pay for a record if you can download it for free?
The (in)famous question.
And I say you'd do it mostly to help me to keep it up.
I mean, seriously.
Of course there are other reasons, like the mp3 quality, extras, the artwork etc. But I would say that the main (if not only) reason for you to buy the record from me should be that since you really like it you want to support me to keep my work up and running.
I know, that’s not what happens in our every day’s life. In our every day’s life we buy things because we can’t do otherwise… But there's a few good examples I’d want to follow (and here you could think of Radiohead or Nine Inch Nails, but I tell you, there are so many more, among us…).

Ah, the prices will always be low.
But not because I think the material isn't worth more money, it's because I want to be reasonable, I really love every mp3 you'll download here, so I want them to get listened to.

No blame, no loss.
That's why I mainly chose the mp3 format.

Ok, that's it.
Feel free to comb!

Woodland is where I want to be

(Portugues)
(Italiano)

O Bosque / Woodland is a micro-label, purely DIY, originally created as a cassete label in Brazil during the 90s.
In the beginning it was a fanzine, about underground music, literature, movies and travel. The fanzine became a label, with which I released material of my own band among others. Later the label started to sell cdrs and distribute other labels as well.
The only proper CD release by the label was a compilation with Brazilian indie bands called Different Songs, in 1998. And it sold well (for an indie release in Brazil).
Then the label was frozen.

I've been playing music since I was 15 (a long time ago, believe me) but I've never made it as a living. I've been a music lover since I was 12 (ok, you know) and that's why I've always been disparately having diverse jobs in all these years, outside the music industry, just to preserve the best music could offer to me: pleasure, with freedom/autonomy.

One of these days I was reading an interesting article about the way things've been changing since the advent of internet, mp3 and networks/sharing programs.

After spending almost 5 years in Italy, I decided to move to the UK and resume my music-related activities.

This blog is the site for the renewed O Bosque / Woodland.
